Running a Business Is Two Jobs

The first is doing the work you are good at: cutting hair, fixing cars, serving customers, looking after clients. The second is managing the business: knowing whether you made money this month, whether there is enough cash for next month, and what to change before a small problem becomes a big one.

Most owners do the first job well, and the second when there is time. There usually isn't.

1

Doing the work

The job you started the business to do. You already do this well.

  • – Serving customers
  • – Delivering the product or service
  • – Managing the team and the day
  • – Keeping the standard up
We do this one
2

Running the numbers

The job that gets done when there is time. The questions it answers:

  • – Did we make money this month?
  • – Is there enough cash for next month?
  • – Are we where we planned to be?
  • – What is coming that could knock us off course?
  • – What should we change?

When job two gets missed

Problems show up late, usually in the bank balance.

Decisions get made on gut feel, because the figures are six months old.

The year-end accounts are the first time you find out how the year went.

How It Works

You keep recording your transactions the way you do now. We do the rest.

  1. 1

    You send your figures

Your month's transactions, in a format we agree at the start: a bookkeeping export, a spreadsheet, or statements and invoices. You do not need to be on any particular software.

  2. 2

    We build your report

A chartered accountant organises the figures, works out what they mean, and writes them up at the level you have chosen.

  3. 3

You get it within three working days

Emailed to you, ready to read in ten minutes. On the Advise level, we also talk it through with you on a call.

What to watch

Sales are ahead of budget, but the quarterly VAT payment and the new lease deposit both fall in October. Cash will dip below £8,000 that month unless the September takings hold. Worth holding off the equipment purchase until November.

A Report You Can Read in Ten Minutes

Not a forty-page pack. Each month's report answers the questions that matter for your level, in plain English, and flags anything you need to act on.

  • The headline numbers first: profit, year to date, cash
  • Where you are against plan, and why it is different
  • What is coming up that you need to plan for
  • The full profit and loss and balance sheet behind it, if you want the detail

Three Levels. Pick the Question You Need Answered.

Each level includes everything in the one before. Start where you are, and move up whenever you want more.

Who It Is For

We offer this service to every type of business: self-employed, sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, charities and community interest companies. Hairdressers, garages, cafés, trades, consultancies, care providers — the sector does not matter. If you run a business and want to know each month how it is doing, it is for you.

You do not need to be keeping books already. We agree at the start what you will send us and in what form, and work from there.

Questions People Ask

What do I need to send you each month?
Your business transactions for the month: sales, purchases, bank activity. We agree the format with you at the start, so it can be an export from your bookkeeping software, a spreadsheet, or bank statements and invoices. Once agreed, it is the same every month.
Do I need to use particular bookkeeping software?
No. You do not need to be on Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or anything else. We work from whatever records you already keep.
What is the difference between this and bookkeeping?
Bookkeeping records what happened. This service tells you what it means. Whether you keep your own books, use a bookkeeper, or just have bank statements and invoices, we agree what you send us and turn it into a report on profit, cash and whether you are on track, and at the Advise level, what to do about it.
Is this instead of my year-end accountant?
No. Your accountant prepares your annual accounts and tax returns once a year. This service tells you how the business is doing every month, while there is still time to do something about it. If you would like us to handle the year-end work as well, we can quote for that separately, and subscribers get 20% off.
What if I do not have a budget?
The Track and Advise levels compare your figures with a budget, so you need one. If you do not have one, tell us. Setting an annual budget is one of the extra services we quote for, subscribers get 20% off, and the cost can be spread across your monthly subscription.
Can I cancel?
There is a three-month minimum, because the first month involves setting up your reporting. After that you can cancel or change level at any point before the next month begins. You can move up a level at any time.
Who does the work?
Clive Unitt FCA, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales with more than thirty years' experience running and advising businesses. The same person reads your figures every month, so nothing gets lost between reports.
